Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc

Professional background

As Chief Digital Officer, I oversee all aspects of Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc.’s digital media efforts. From sales to content, marketing to product development, my focus is on strategic multi-platform initiatives that leverage existing and emerging channels and technologies. With more than 120 media companies in 23 states, CNHI is uniquely positioned to bring value through engagement with our local communities. I am a proud part of a digital team that is passionate, aggressive and focused on audience and advertiser experience. Prior to CNHI, I was vice president of interactive media at The State Media Company in Columbia, S.C., a McClatchy subsidiary. I have an extensive background in the digital platforms of the television and radio industries, having worked for Fox and ESPN networks as well as Belo Corp. I spent five years as general manager/executive producer of the PGA TOUR's new media division. I am a graduate of both the University of Iowa, with a bachelors degree in broadcast communications and Duquesne University, with a masters degree in business leadership.

Year Matthew joined news media industry

2008

Accomplishment of which Matthew is proudest

Winning Emmys in both television and digital affirmed the belief that if you focus on the audience/consumer, the platform really doesn't matter.

Accomplishment of which Matthew is proudest

I admired the organization and its mission from afar, and when presented with the opportunity when I arrived at CNHI, I jumped on it. Being able to talk to people that represent media companies all over the world has provided a persistent flow of ideas and best practices. It certainly represents the best and brightest talent in our industry.

Long-term challenges facing news media industry

For too long it was about us, and not them (the audience). Always focusing on the audience is the biggest challenge - it seems simple, but long-term habits are hard to break.

Personal message

If you're not energized and excited to work in media during this hyper-paced technical evolution, it isn't going to slow down any time soon. And who'd want it to?
